  • The Earth
Scientists found that our Earth is not cold hard rock all the way through. Not at all. Only the crust, the outside of the Earth is cold solid rock. Below this cold solid crust of the Earth, there is hot roc that melts in places. Every now and then some of the hot, melted rock is pushed out. This hot, melted rock expands, and can push its way out through a weak spot in the Earth's crust. When this happens, a volcano is made. The melted rock below the Earth's crust can flow, like toothpaste, if it is squeezed. If you squeeze a partly filled tube of toothpaste in one place, what happens? The toothpaste flows to another part of the tube. If you press down one part of the tube with a finger, what happens? This tube rises in another place, as the toothpaste flows there. making a hill. Strangely enough, when a volcano forms, the Earth may be behaving like a tube of toothpaste. If the Earth is pressed down in one place,it may rise in another place. Hot,melted rock within the Earth may flow to another place as the Earth is pressed down. When this hot melted rock breads through the Earth's crust, volcano forms. A volcano is only one kind of mountain. Other kinds of mountains form whenthe Earrth's crust is raised. But each time the Earth is raised in one place, something is pressing against the Earth in another place.

Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called for more consensus from non-Communist parties to maintain the leadership of the CPC and boost confidence toward the development of socialism. Xi, also president of China, made the remarks on Friday at a symposium attended by representatives of non-Communist parties, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, and those without party affiliation. Xi told them to unite their parties' members and the people connected with them, view the problems and difficulties of development in an objective manner, and reach more political consensus. Xi said he hoped the representatives make full use of their own advantages, focus on the country's major strategic plans, do thorough research, and raise valuable proposals. The representatives should have an accurate understanding of the CPC Central Committee's analysis and judgment of the current economic situation, unite all forces that can be united, make full use of all resources, and make a joint contribution to building a comprehensive well-off society, he said. The president pointed out that in the first half of this year, the country's main economic index developed better than expectation, with a more stable macroeconomy and improvements in people's livelihoods. • Alibaba CEO predicts huge sales growth for the current year
Alibaba Group Holding Ltd said on Thursday it expected its explosive sales increases to continue-issuing its first revenue guidance for the current financial year of 45 to 49 percent growth to more than $34 billion, beating analysts' estimates by a huge margin. That annual sales projection, at an investors conference, compared with 56 percent actual revenue growth posted for its 2017 financial year to end March to 158.3 billion ($23.3 billion), and comes as the internet behemoth moves to consolidate its position in the fierce business-to-customer segment. At the same investors day last year, the group predicted 48 percent revenue growth for fiscal 2017 and that was subsequently revised up to 53 percent growth. Alibaba Chief Executive Officer Daniel Zhang, addressing the investors day on Thursday in Hangzhou, said that growing "stickiness" of users-coupled with data technologies that facilitate online shopping-would drive sales to a record high and boost gross merchandise volumes to $1 trillion by 2020. Despite an already huge customer base, the current year sales projection easily exceeded market expectations. Citi Research modeled revenue growth at 34.7 percent year-on-year, according to the South China Morning Post. In a later presentation, CFO Maggie Wu said the company would reinvest funds to expand its consumer base, improve customer's experience of its products, in a bid to gain the B2C market share. Already the world's biggest e-commerce company, Alibaba's Tmall site is being challenged by JD.com Inc at home. It reported its first quarterly earnings-of 239 million yuan ($35.2 million) for the three months ended March-since listing in 2014. Wu said the optimism behind the revenue forecast comes on the back of improving technologies which is providing more content that enhances the level of engagement for customers and their resulting loyalty to its various platforms. CEO Daniel Zhang said the adoption of artificial intelligence big data and cloud computing, was set to revolutionize the online retail landscape with the advent of uncannily precise product searches, relevant and holistic product recommendations based on shopping habits, and virtual storefronts displaying tailored product information. Alibaba is branching out overseas, having securing 80 million annual active users outside China via its indigenous foreign marketplace AliExpress and Lazada Group, the Southeast Asian e-commerce group it acquired last year. Other new business lines are also gaining traction, according to Zhang, with cloud computing transforming from an infrastructure provider to an application-enhanced service.

  • Overseas cooperation grows at leading agricultural center
More than 30 students from Mongolia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, Tanzania and Thailand were learning water-saving irrigation technology in the China-Kazakhstan Friendship Orchard, located in the Yangling Agricultural High-Tech Industries Demonstration Zone, 80 kilometers from Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi province. Guo Lanjun, general manager of the orchard, said it produced 4,000-5,000 kilograms of apples annually, and half of them are exported to countries such as Russia and Kazakhstan. Due to the high quality of its products, the orchard also acts as an education base and offers training and guidance to overseas agricultural technicians, on subjects ranging from management of apple orchards and how to protect them from being damaged by insects. Guo's apple orchard is only a small part of Yangling zone's international exchanges and cooperation in agricultural sector. As China's first agricultural high-tech industries demonstration zone, Yangling has about 6,000 researchers on some 70 subjects within the agricultural sector. Tens of thousands of people, especially those related with the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, also come all the way to Yangling to learn about its advanced agricultural technology. Since 2005, the demonstration zone has trained more than 1,500 agricultural officials and technicians from 106 countries. Ma Jing, deputy director of the international cooperation bureau of the demonstration zone, said that the training classes mainly targeted people from developing countries, on various subjects such as dry-land agriculture, agricultural economics and green city construction. Yangling has co-established demonstration parks of modern agricultural technology with the United States, New Zealand, Netherlands and Israel in the area. It also has built eight cooperation agricultural parks overseas to help with local agricultural development, such as in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Russia. Luo Jun, vice-president of the Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, which is located in Yangling, said that there was great potential for strengthening cooperation in the agricultural sector with countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. "Many countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt have similar weather conditions and ecological environments compared with the Northwest part of China, and have similar technological requirements for agricultural development," he said. Between 2007 to 2016 the university enrolled more than 1,000 overseas students from 53 countries, and about 60 percent of them are from the economies taking part in the Belt and Road Initiative. Diddugodage Chamila Jeewani from Sri Lanka has studied at the university for about four years for her doctorate in genetic crop breeding. Before, she was the assistant director for research in the Department of Agriculture in Sri Lanka.

  • International Commercial Terms
Export prices are quoted in various ways. The major systems available for use in quoting prices are known as trade terms. The use of such terms as FOB, FAS. CFR.and CIF is important with regard to specifying not only where the exporter's responsibility and liability end (and the buyer's responsibility and liability begin), but they determine the costs which the exporter will bear. Thus, it is customary in the calculation of a price quotation to add the appropriate costs to the basic price.

  • Shanghai notches up 6.8% GDP growth in Q1
Shanghai posted 6.8 percent GDP growth in the first quarter of 2017, a better than expected performance thanks to recovering industrial output and the continuous growth of the service sector, said the city's statistics and development and reform authorities. Despite the slowdown in transaction growth and investment growth in the real estate market after home purchase restrictions were introduced, Shanghai's Q1 economic growth was better than the 6.7 percent in first quarter of 2016, according to the Shanghai Statistics Bureau. "The first quarter economic growth data showed that Shanghai's economic growth pattern is shifting toward being consumption driven, with the service industry, high-tech, and emerging strategic sectors being the major contributors to growth," said Ruan Qing, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Development and Reform Commission. Service sectors, including finance, shipping, and consultancy, contributed some 70.7 percent to Shanghai's economic growth, according to Tang Huihao, chief economist at Shanghai Statistics Bureau. Industrial robotics grew 87.5 percent and renewable energy automobiles grew 29.3 percent, showing that high-end, emerging industrial sectors are expanding rapidly, said Tang. Imports and exports are also recovering from sluggish growth last year, posting 13.2 percent growth for exports and 25.3 percent for imports. "Commodities, including crude oil, coal, steel and iron ore are dominating imports, reflecting recovering manufacturing sectors," said Tang. As for the real estate market, policies against speculation in the city have been taking effect, and more work will be done to support the stable and healthy growth of the market, said the authorities. Transactions of new homes in Shanghai dropped 67.2 percent while transactions of pre-owned homes dropped 72 percent. Average home prices have been declining since March, which saw a 0.1 percent month-on-month decline, said Tang. Analysts said that key cities' economic growth reflect the overall trend of China's economic growth pattern which is shifting to a consumption-driven one, and they are undergoing changes amid reducing overcapacity and supporting the growth of emerging sectors such as high-tech and smart manufacturing. "Generally speaking, conventional manufacturing sectors have been recovering since last November, and the first quarter showed that consumption is growing fast, particularly healthcare and food and beverages," said a research note from China Galaxy Securities. The leisure and sports industries have also expanded rapidly in Shanghai. In the first quarter of 2017, consumption in sports and leisure grew 22 percent. Meanwhile, Beijing posted 6.9 percent growth in GDP in the first quarter, the city's bureau of statistics said on Wednesday. It recorded 604.05 billion yuan ($87.75 billion) in gross domestic product during the period. Investment in real estate development dropped 7.2 percent for the first three months compared with the same period last year to 62 billion yuan. Pang Jiangqian, spokesperson of the bureau, said the investment decline in real estate was mainly due to reduced investment in real estate projects for commercial use.

ISTANBUL - China's COSCO Shipping Lines on Sunday marked the opening of a new regional service of container shipping that connects the ports in Northern Europe and those in the Mediterranean Sea. • Xiongan New Area vital to coordinated development around Beijing: Hebei party chief
SHIJIAZHUANG - Establishing the Xiongan New Area and developing the area to absorb non-capital functions from Beijing are vital measures to advance the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, said Zhao Kezhi, party chief of Hebei province Wednesday. China announced Saturday it will establish the Xiongan New Area in Hebei province, about 100 km southwest of downtown Beijing, spanning three counties. "Establishment of the Xiongan New Area comes against the backdrop of advancing coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The move is of huge significance for long-term development in the region," said Zhao, secretary of Hebei Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, in an exclusive interview with Xinhua. "Xiongan features geological advantages, convenient transportation, an excellent environment, ample resources and lots of room for development," said Zhao. "The area is the first choice for pooling some non-capital functions from Beijing." Beijing has announced it will move some municipal administrative organs from the downtown area to the east suburb of Tongzhou. Xiongan and Tongzhou will form "two wings" for Beijing, said Zhao, adding that the new area is conducive to optimizing the region's urban layout and exploring a new model of optimized development in densely populated areas. The announcement attracted investors to the counties of Xiongxian, Rongcheng and Anxin in the new area, driving up housing prices there. The preparatory committee of the new area said Tuesday it will control illegal land and housing purchases as well as construction. The committee had discovered 765 real estate violations, and seven people had been arrested for real estate violations as of April 4. "The new area aims to become a gathering place for high-tech industries, not a place for large-scale real estate investment and property speculation," said Zhao.

  • China, Australia embrace cooperation, free trade in face of rising
BEIJING - China and Australia on Friday inked a series of bilateral agreements and moved to expand free trade between the two major Asia-Pacific economies in a vote of confidence for regional cooperation in the face of rising protectionism. Visiting Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and his Australian counterpart, Malcolm Turnbull in Canberra witnessed the signing of a number of cooperation documents in such fields as the economy and trade, innovation, agriculture, food, intellectual property, security of law enforcement, tourism and education. The two countries also started negotiations to further expand the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) to other fields, especially services and investment, Li told the Australia-China Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum in Sydney. In the new global reality that seems to be tilting towards protectionism and anti-globalization, China and Australia offer a perfect example of how free trade does not lead to tit-for-tat combat, but generates gains for both. Australia, a country abundant in natural resources, needs globalization for international trade, while the world's biggest trader China needs an open market. As Australia's biggest trading partner for the past 8 years, China has been a loyal buyer of everything from iron ore to milk powder and a passionate salesman of everything the country makes. Australia has become China's eighth largest trading partner. China-Australia bilateral trade reached $104 billion in 2016, expanding at least 1,500-fold since the two forged diplomatic relations in 1972. "Those solid facts tell the world they need each other," said Liu Qing, head of the Asia-Pacific department at the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS). No doubt protectionism is going to win applause somewhere somehow, said Liu, but it would not change the prospects between China and Australia. The two have highly complementary economies and development strategies, said Liu, referring to China's Belt and Road Initiative and Australia's development plan in its north. In an article on The Australian newspaper on Thursday, Li said, "Advance is a key word in both the Chinese and Australian national anthems." He believed that the two countries will counter global instability through steady development and co-operation. China and Australia have a long history of cooperation. The two countries sign the ChAFTA in 2015, which immediately brought down tariffs for Australian beef, wine, fruits and other products to have easier access to the Chinese market. In the wine industry, before ChAFTA, China was Australia's second-largest market, worth about $320 million in 2015-2016. Australian wine was subject to a 14-percent tariff before it hit Chinese shelves. Now about a year later, with the tariff reduced to 5.6 percent, China has become Australia's largest market for wine, now worth almost $375 million annually. According to the ChAFTA, a third round of tariff cuts took place in January. When the agreement is fully implemented, 96 percent of Australian goods will be duty free, so are 100 percent of Chinese exports to Australia. China and Australia do not always see eye to eye - anti-dumping probes come and go - and the ChAFTA process was full of twists and turns. But the fact that they have overcome various hurdles and reached the present stage demonstrates that they have both the will and the wisdom to chart a win-win course. "This is a bilateral relationship that has been overwhelmingly good for both countries," said James Laurenceson, deputy director of the Australia-China Relations Institute at the University of Technology Sydney. "You don't trade because one person wins and one person loses. That's the beauty of economics; whether it's trade or investment, it's a positive sum game," said Laurenceson.

  • China's crude oil output falls 8%
BEIJING- China's crude oil output fell 8 percent year on year in the first two months of 2017 as refineries slashed production and imported more due to high exploitation costs, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed Thursday. Crude oil output came in at 31.4 million tons during the period, while imports gained 12.5 percent to 65.8 million tons. Although the global oil price has hovered around $50 per barrel this year, domestic refineries still opted for more imports due to high production costs, according to the NBS. In the first two months, natural gas output totaled 25.2 billion cubic meters, unchanged from the same period last year. Imports of natural gas grew 7.5 percent. China aims to increase domestic crude oil output to 200 million tons by 2020, while supply capacity for natural gas should exceed 360 billion cubic meters.

  • 2017 China GDP growth rate expected to be 6.64%
China`s economic growth rate is expected to decrease in 2017, while the GDP growth rate may reach 6.64 percent, 0.06 percentage points below last year`s rate, according to a report released in Beijing on Feb. 22. The report was released at a seminar organized by Xiamen University and Xinhua`s Economic Information Daily. It states that competent authorities need to keep the growth rate of investment in infrastructure above 20 percent in order to maintain the GDP growth rate around 6.5 percent. One current problem in China`s economy is the stalled growth rate of investment, which is caused by a sharp decline in private investment. Moreover, overcapacity and a lack of effective supply have also put pressure on economic growth, according to Lu Shengrong, a professor at the Center for Macroeconomic Research at Xiamen University. Li Shantong, a researcher at the Development Research Center of the State Council, agreed with Lu`s idea, adding that it is essential to increase the proportion of private investment and total investment in the real economy, in order to stimulate economic growth. Zhang Liqun, another researcher at the State Council research center, pointed out that private investment is sensitive to changes in the market, so its fluctuations reflect changes in economic growth and politics. The growth rate of private investment is expected to pick up this year.
